Review: Pulse Reader iPad App

Pulse is the anti-newspaper; a news aggregation creation of two youngster graduates. You could go to the loo, fire up the content grids, which are like prettier, pictorial RSS feeds and within seconds your fingers have swiped 20 or so grids of news from multiple sources and maybe delved into a few. Content bursts at a pulse-like speed with the user in complete control of navigation as you flick in and out of what interests. You can hover over one source in detail in portrait, or skim up and down through up to 20 sources in landscape. The usable interface suits all reading habits.

The Times disappears…?

So as of today, The Times and The Sunday Times have disappeared from our world wide web (UPDATE: or has it? see below). Unless of course, you are paying the £2 per week subscription fee (see Adam Westbrook for a good summary). It seems there are no excerpts to tempt non-subscribers, no text for search engines, no RSS feeds for simple syndication, no value for sharing with friends, and therefore, no content marketing.

Google and News

This post follows from “The Publishers’ Dilemma: To Google or not to Google?” to detail the major products that Google has built for news delivery, and a little announcement of our own.

Google has been building tools to deliver news for years. These generally focus ruthlessly on utility and end user benefit and don’t try to support the historic business models to which newspapers still cling.

A newsfeed bundle for “The future of media”

Several people have asked me recently for suggestions on good sources of news and analysis regarding the future of the media industry. So I have bundled up my favourite feeds on this topic into an OPML file, which you can import into Google Reader, or any other feed reader (see below for details).
