FORTUNE is one of the forefront leaders in business magazines, and, with this app, certainly still a leader in delivering great financial content with a high-tech twist.
Our ratings:
1) Usefulness/Value to User
Its business-oriented content certainly does very well on the iPad format, as FORTUNE adds something entirely new to instant stock quotes and features company stats/profiles. While it does offer everything as in the print version, it gives a bit extra with iPad-exclusive stories and photos, and powerful interactive charts. 9/10
2) Useability/Interface
Easy to use, great to look at while being very informative. You don’t have to wade through the content-heavy layout, and it makes looking at stock quotes almost fun. Its free preview issue does well in giving a tantalizing taste of what FORTUNE may continue to offer in terms of business reporting as a magazine experience. 8/10
3) Price/Business Model
Very smart move of FORTUNE magazine to release a free edition first, kind of helps consumers ease into buying the single issues as they come out. Subscription issues are not yet released, but many fans of FORTUNE might not hesitate to plop down $4.99 as much as they have for other mags of the same pricing. 5/10
4) Additional Functionality
As mentioned, FORTUNE makes use of the iPad technical spritz to give financial charts and stock quotes a whole new twist for consumers. Information charts and profiles of companies and the Fortune 500 listings are also a great addition. Sharing however, so far, seems to be very limited. 6/10.
Summary
FORTUNE is probably one of only a handful of magazines that have truly made a difference in what they have to offer consumers. They used what the iPad can do, and have in turn used that to breathe new life into business and financial news content. Still, it will be interesting to see how audiences as a whole will react to single issue sales at $4.99 each later on.
